Historically, I’m not one to post too many game reviews, preferring to soak up everyone else’s opinions before making a purchase instead of contributing to the purchasing decisions of others, but I’ll try to share a halfway decent review of 𝕯𝖎𝖊 𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝓥𝖆𝖑𝖍𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖆! as I really enjoyed this game.
Firstly, it’s a fun little beat ’em up, inspired by Castle Crashers, Golden Axe and Diablo 2, with all of those influences telling in both the humour and the playing style.
The game scrolls from left to right, but you determine the pace and you can go back on yourself if you forget something.
I first came across the game via Kickstarter when Monster Couch (the studio behind the game), were pledges, and as they’ve now exceeded their funding goal, it’s imminently going to be released on Steam and console.
The premise is that you are a wispy, floating Valkyrie, and your entire purpose is to control fallen Vikings (as well as other things, both animate and inanimate) and help them achieve as much carnage and glory as possible on their path to Valhalla.
In the final game you can either play solo or with up to 4 other people, resulting in a fun and messy co-op game. I get the feeling that some bosses would benefit from being tackled by you and a buddy instead of just having the A.I. assist you, but either way you’ll have a great time.
Each grave you pass gives you an visual indicator of what that fallen Vikings weapon of choice will be, allowing you to make a selection based on the challenge(s) facing you.
If, like me, you merrily smash away at every inanimate item you pass in the hope that it results in Fat Loot, you’ll be happy to know that there is loot hidden everywhere, with the aim of helping you to strengthen and enhance you.
Your Valkyrie can be injured or die, but the longer you stay alive the stronger you/she will become. Equally, the longer you can keep a controlled Viking alive, the stronger they’ll be and the more abilities you’ll have access to.
As I played a PC version of 𝕯𝖎𝖊 𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝓥𝖆𝖑𝖍𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖆!, this felt like a straightforward W,A,S,D game, but there’s also a nice amount of Viking lore that you’ll encounter throughout the game to flesh out the characters and their world a little more.
All in all, 𝕯𝖎𝖊 𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝓥𝖆𝖑𝖍𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖆! is a really fun game about Vikings, and who doesn’t love Vikings!
Coming to Steam, PC, Linux, Mac, PS4 and Xbox One in the imminent future (Spring 2017).
