- Cloud Atlas. Due for release in October, actual date unspecified. Directed by Tom Tkywer and The Wachowski Brothers, starring Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Ben Whishaw & Jim Broadbent. Plot Summary: based on the novel by the same name by David Mitchell, the films weaves 6 stories together, jumping in time, moving from a savage Pacific island in the 1850’s all the way forward to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each story is linked to the main character in the next one, all but the last one getting interrupted in order to move on to the next one, the last one going back in time to conclude all the previous stories. Although it has the potential to get messy, The Wachowski’s and the excellent cast involved could elevate this into something wonderful.
- Frankenweenie. Due for release October 5th. Directed by Tim Burton, voice starring Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Martin Short & Catherine O’Hara . Plot Summary: based on Tim Burton’s 1984 short film, when a young boy’s dog is hit by a car, the boy – something of an inventor – brings his dog back to life using one of his machines and lightning. This reanimation has unintended, monstrous consequences. Darker than Disney but with a funny undercurrent, this 3D stop-motion animated film by Tim Burton should follow his other cult classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride.
