- The Avengers. Due for release May 4th. Directed by Joss Whedon, starring Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Cobie Smulders, Chris Evans, Samual L. Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stellan Skarsgård, Paul Bettany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Hiddleston, Amanda Righetti, Lou Ferrigno, Clark Gregg…pretty much a who’s who of everyone who’s played a Marvel character over the past 5-years. Plot Summary: does it honestly matter? With this much talent going on it’s either going to be an epic superhero film on the sort of scale that will redefine all to come, or will be an embarrassing mishmash of walk-ons and one-liners and a wealth of talent left idling.
- Dark Shadows. Due for release May 11th. Directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Jonny Lee Miller, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley & Bella Heathcote. Plot Summary: based on a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith which was turned into a cult TV series that ran from 1966-1971, the story centers around a 1752 Maine-based playboy who breaks the heart of a witch who consequently places a curse on him that turns him into a vampire, followed by his being buried alive. Two centuries later he is freed and meets the dysfunctional remnants of his family line. To be honest, I’ve served my time with vampire movies, the last 5-years seeing an explosion of films and TV series cashing in on this current wave of popularity. Don’t get me started on Twilight. However Johnny Depp and Tim Burton invariably prove to be a match made in heaven, so I look forward to seeing how Burton and Depp handle the story and character.
- Battleship. Due for release May 18th. Directed by Peter Berg, starring Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Tadanobu Asano, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Josh Pence, Natalia Castellanos & Peter MacNicol. Plot Summary: trying to convert a boardgame into a film, a fleet of navy ships discover they are not alone out on the water, and are forced to battle a destructive armada for survival. It turns out that alien species The Regents are trying to build a massive power source on our beloved Earth, however as they choose the ocean as their location they come across the navy boys and girls. I’m not quite foaming at the mouth for this one, but it has aliens, action and special effects so I’ll be there with an armful of popcorn and soft drinks.
- Men in Black III. Due for release May 25th. Directed by Barry Sonnenfield, starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Alice Eve, Emma Thompson, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, Jemaine Clement, Rip Torn & Michael Stuhlbarg. Plot Summary: as with Avengers, does it really matter? With Tommy Lee being replaced by Josh Brolin for some of the film in a ‘J travels back in time to meet a younger K’, we’re just happy they managed to squeeze in screen time between Smith and Lee Jones.
